All About Wallpaper

Since the beginning of the year, we have been hearing that wallpaper is coming back into fashion and that we would all fall head over heels in love with it again. Although that prediction failed to materialise, I do admit that my love for wallpapers is still going strong.

I love it so much that I am seriously considering wallpapering my own cloakroom again. This time I’d like something bold and beautiful like Graham & Brown’s Aquarium Deep Sea!

I love mural wallpaper too and it seems to have done well in 2023. Some say the trend is here to stay. Perhaps this might be due to our love for nature and open spaces, which has translated into the most beautiful murals. I am a huge fan of nature-inspired wallpaper in offices, living rooms and even bedrooms. But how do you know which one to pick? Ask yourself these questions:

Which colour and pattern are you trying to complement? If you already have a coherent scheme running through the house, an existing colour palette or a particular style of furniture then the colour and pattern of wallpaper you choose needs to complement it.

What do you want from your wallpaper?
Are you looking to create a focal point? Add texture? Cover imperfections on your walls? Add height? Create the impression of width in a narrow room?  Asking yourself these questions will be a great start.

Where will you hang it?
If in a bedroom, you might like to consider calming and soothing colours but if you plan to install it in the living room or dining room a bolder pattern could be perfect!

Before you purchase your wallpaper, I strongly suggest you order plenty of samples before committing to one. This allows you to see how the pattern and colour look in your space.

If the wallpaper you choose is high-end, has a challenging pattern to match or is a mural, you need to ensure it is professionally hung, following the manufacturer’s installation instructions so it is done properly.

ProTip: How to calculate wallpaper quantity

  • Measure the height of the room, divide by the pattern repeat and round it up to the next pattern (H/PR = L). This will give you the wallpaper Cut Length

  • Measure the width of the room, divide by the width of the wallpaper then round it up if necessary (W/WW = X). This number will tell you how many cut lengths you will need per wall. Now make sure you add 10% for wastage and place your order!
