Slat walls and how to use them

Ok I confess, I love an open plan space as much as anyone BUT it needs to have purpose and different zones in order for it to work, which is why I love separating a room with slats.

Whether you choose wooden, metal, or another material slats can offer the following benefits:

1.     Privacy: Slats can provide a degree of privacy while still allowing light to filter through. This is particularly useful in open-plan spaces where you may want to create separate zones without completely closing off areas.

2.     Visual Interest: Slats add texture and visual interest to a room, breaking up large expanses of wall or creating dynamic visual effects. Depending on the design and material, slats can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space, adding a touch of modernity or rustic charm.

3.     Air Circulation: Depending on the spacing between the slats, they can facilitate air circulation between rooms. This can be especially beneficial in areas where airflow is important, such as kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms.

4.     Light Control: Slats offer a level of light control, allowing you to adjust the amount of natural light entering a room. By tilting the slats, you can direct sunlight away from certain areas or create interesting patterns of light and shadow.

5.     Flexibility: Unlike solid walls or doors, slats provide a degree of flexibility in terms of space usage. They can be adjusted or removed to create larger or smaller openings as needed, making them suitable for dynamic or evolving environments.

6.     Sound Absorption: While not as effective as solid walls, slats can help absorb and diffuse sound to some extent. This can be beneficial in reducing echo or noise transmission between rooms, creating a more peaceful and comfortable environment.

Overall, separating a room with slats can offer a balance between openness and privacy, allowing you to customize your space according to your specific needs and preferences. Whether used for functional purposes or as a design element, slats can add versatility and style to any interior.

ProTip: TV Backdrops

Another way to use wooden slats is as a backdrop to your TV. We recently designed a living room and used a off-centre slat panel to provide texture and interest to an otherwise play and long wall.

They can also be used in the bedroom as headboards where space is scarce but the interest is vast.
