Easy ways to update your home for the winter

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisper, there’s no better time to infuse your home with warmth and comfort. A great and often underrated way to achieve this is through the careful selection of textiles.

From soft flannel to sumptuous velvet and the timeless appeal of wool, the right choice of seasonal fabrics, colours and design can transform your living space into a cosy haven that beckons you in from the chilly outdoors.

Take flannel, for example, with its soft and brushed surface, flannel is a beloved fabric for autumn and winter. Its brushed finish provides an inviting texture and a gorgeous, cosy feel. It’s a versatile fabric that can be incorporated in various ways, from flannel bedding to throw blankets and decorative pillow covers (oh and I do love my flannel PJs too!). It can evoke a sense of comfort and warmth, making it an ideal choice for those seeking to create a snug setting.

I’m quite a fan of velvet too, with its luxurious and lustrous appearance, it never fails to add an element of sophistication to any room. It feels exquisite to the touch and has excellent insulating properties. Consider velvet-upholstered furniture, velvet curtains (or blinds), or even velvet accent pillows to introduce a touch of opulence and warmth to your decor.

We can’t talk about winter fabrics without mentioning wool, of course! It has been a trusted textile for generations, and its enduring popularity is well-deserved. This natural fibre is not only warm but also incredibly durable. Wool rugs, throws, and even upholstery provide a classic and timeless look. Its insulating properties make it an excellent choice for maintaining a cosy temperature in your home during the colder months. Don’t shy away from wool-mixed fabrics, they can be just as lovely and perhaps even more durable.

If you are unsure about how to incorporate these ideas into your home décor, here are a few tips:

Mix and Match: Combine different textures and textiles to create depth and interest in your décor

by pairing a wool rug with flannel throw pillows for a harmonious blend of warmth and texture,

for example.

Layering: Layering textiles can also make your space feel even cosier.

Try placing a velvet throw

over your flannel-covered couch or bed, and you’ll be tempted to curl up with a good book… or a

hot chocolate!

Seasonal Colour Palette: Choose textiles in colours that complement the season. Deep, rich hues

like earthy browns, forest greens, and warm burgundies can add to that all-important wintery feel

with depth and contrast.

Accessories Matter: Don’t overlook the impact of smaller accessories. Consider flannel table

runners, woolly tablecloths, or velvet ribbon accents to tie your seasonal theme together.
