How to keep cool this summer

Combining Cooling Features with Style

We seem to be expecting a heatwave this month but how prepared are we to deal with the heat in our homes these days? Well, aside from a cold shower there are a few options you should consider too, for example:

Ceiling fans – my least favourite option

Okay, I admit, they are not my favourite home gadget!

Ceiling fans can be a timeless and efficient way to enhance air circulation and keep your rooms cool or at least ensure ventilation.

Nowadays the modern ceiling fans come in a variety of styles (personally I still dislike them unless I am in the Maldives but that’s just me!).

If you are looking for a ceiling fan, you might as well get a fan with energy-efficient motors and multiple speed settings to customise airflow according to your preference.

Some models even come with integrated lighting, offering a dual-purpose solution that enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of your space.

Portable fans – my ‘make-do’ option

Another option for hot days is having a portable fan, which is a much more versatile solution. These fans are easy to move from room to room, providing targeted cooling wherever is required and are easy to put away when they are not in use.

Portable fans are available in a variety of sizes and styles, from compact desk fans to larger floor models. Many come with features like adjustable height, oscillation, and remote controls, allowing you to direct airflow precisely where you need it. Additionally, some portable fans include air purifying functions, adding an extra layer of comfort by improving air quality. Although I must say, they are still not my favourite option!

Air Conditioning – my favourite option

Thanks to global warming, and an excess of insulation, the Air Conditioning Unit (AC) is an increasingly popular solution for maintaining a comfortable indoor climate.

AC systems allows you to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature at home, regardless of the outside weather just like your central heating system and is particularly beneficial during extreme heat waves.

The more modern AC units even reduce indoor humidity levels, making the environment more comfortable and less sticky.

The best thing about it for me, and for my family, is the fact that it comes with filters, which means it helps reduce dust and allergens (bye bye hay fever!) resulting in improved indoor air quality.

Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive option and needs to be taken into consideration.

A good compromise between a complete AC System and a fan might be a free-standing, portable aircon. Some of the better options work well in rooms up to 60sqm!

Whatever you do, be sure to keep hydrated during and heatwave and take good care.
